Shiawassee County Released Inmate Records
A release means that one agency ended its physical custody. It does not always mean freedom from every case, hold, or reporting duty. A person may leave the Shiawassee County Jail on bond, personal recognizance, time served, dismissal, or another court order. The jail may instead transfer that person to the Michigan Department of Corrections, another county, a federal custodian, or an immigration authority. The Sheriff’s release or transfer form identifies what Shiawassee did. A court order explains the legal basis. A receiving system shows whether custody continued elsewhere.
That distinction shapes every Shiawassee County released inmate search. A live jail list answers who is held now. A release record answers when and why jail custody ended. OTIS answers certain state corrections questions. MiCOURT supplies bond, sentence, dismissal, and probation entries. VINE reports custody events supplied by participating agencies. No single blank result proves that all custody or supervision ended.
- Time served
- A court-authorized release after the imposed jail term or credited time is complete.
- Parole
- Release from state prison while MDOC supervision continues.
- Probation
- Community supervision ordered by a court, which does not necessarily follow prison.
- Discharge
- The end of the sentence or supervision shown by the issuing authority.
How Shiawassee County Releases Occur
The legal path matters because it determines which record will be most useful. A bond or recognizance order may put someone outside the jail while the criminal case remains open. A sentence to MDOC ends county jail custody but begins state prison custody. A dismissal may support release, yet another case or warrant can still hold the person. “Released” must always be tied to a named custodian and event.
| Departure type | What it means | Best next source |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or recognizance | County jail custody ends under court-set terms | Jail confirmation, bond order, and Pretrial Services when ordered |
| Time served | The county sentence calculation reaches its end | Commitment, jail calculation, and release form |
| Dismissal or court release | A signed order authorizes departure in that case | Register of Actions, signed order, and jail execution time |
| Transfer to MDOC | Shiawassee custody ends, but state custody begins | Transfer record followed by OTIS |
| Parole | Secure state custody ends while MDOC jurisdiction continues | OTIS Date Paroled and Parolee status |
| Transfer to another agency | The person leaves the jail but not necessarily custody | Destination field and receiving agency locator |
A transfer is not a community release. The Shiawassee County Jail form is strongest for the physical handoff, while the court or receiving agency is strongest for the next legal status.
Shiawassee Release Record Fields
The Sheriff’s online site does not publish a person-level field set. The retained inmate jacket may still contain the facts needed to document a departure. Michigan General Schedule 11 identifies intake records, booking cards, bonds, court documents, inmate release forms, prison transfers, property acknowledgments, warrants, extradition papers, and mug shots as possible jacket contents. “May include” is important. It describes the record category, not a promise that every item exists in every file.
| Requested field | What it can establish |
|---|---|
| Name and booking identifier | Links the release to the correct jail admission |
| Booking date and time | Defines the custody episode being researched |
| Release date and time | Records when Shiawassee physical custody ended |
| Release type or authority | Distinguishes bond, sentence completion, dismissal, or other authority |
| Destination or transfer agency | Shows community departure or continued custody elsewhere |
| Bond or court paperwork | Connects jail action to the legal order |
| Property acknowledgment | Documents handling of personal property at departure |
The actual order date and the jail’s execution time can differ. Keep both. A document saying that one sentence discharged also does not automatically resolve another active case.
Request Shiawassee County Release Records
The focused route is the Shiawassee County Sheriff FOIA page. Send the county form to the FOIA Coordinator at the Sheriff’s Office or use the fax route shown by the agency. The records page contains no working public email address, so one should not be guessed. Ask for records sufficient to show booking and departure rather than an entire jail file.
- Identify the person by full name, known aliases, date of birth if known, and a bounded booking or date range.
- Request the booking date and time, release date and time, legal basis, destination, release form, and relevant bond or transfer page.
- Ask for electronic delivery, redaction of exempt parts, and release of the reasonably separable remainder.
- Set a cost ceiling and request an itemized estimate before the agency goes above it.
- Compare the response with the court order and any receiving-agency status.
Michigan FOIA provides an initial five-business-day response framework. The County may issue one written extension of no more than ten business days. That timing concerns the response, not a guaranteed production date. If estimated cost exceeds $50, County policy may permit a good-faith deposit. Standard letter or legal copies are capped at $0.10 per sheet, plus other costs allowed by law.
The Sheriff Records page shows the mail and fax route. The request-form screenshot below helps locate the correct packet before a focused request is prepared.
The form is only the start. Precise identifiers and a narrow field list reduce the chance of confusing two people or receiving unrelated protected material.
Shiawassee Release Retention Rules
Michigan FOIA, MCL 15.231 and following, governs access to nonexempt executive-branch public records. MCL 15.234 governs allowable fees, MCL 15.235 sets the response framework, and MCL 15.243 lists exemptions. When feasible, an agency should redact exempt information and produce the rest.
General Schedule 11 retains a local jail inmate jacket until release plus ten years, but the schedule does not prove every listed form was created or remains wholly public.
Set-aside and expungement rules can change later display and availability. Qualifying automatic set-asides may remove a case from public MiCOURT display. Some biometric images may be destroyed under state law in qualifying nonconviction situations. A blank public search can therefore reflect scope, age, sealing, or lawful removal rather than proof that no booking or release occurred.
Tracing Shiawassee Bond Releases
The jail page says its lobby Canteen kiosk can accept bond payments. A kiosk transaction alone does not prove that a named person left immediately. Staff must still act on the correct case, confirm all holds, and complete processing. The District Court bond order supplies the type, amount, and conditions. The release form supplies the jail departure time.
Shiawassee County Pretrial Services screens many in-custody misdemeanor and felony defendants under Michigan Court Rule 6.106. The office can recommend and supervise conditions when the court orders them. A person may thus be outside the jail while the case, check-ins, testing, monitoring, or other terms remain active. “Bonded out” should never be restated as “case closed.”
Property After Shiawassee Jail Release
Michigan’s retention schedule treats personal-property intake and release records separately from the full inmate jacket. Those records remain through the end of the calendar year plus one year. A property-release form may also appear inside a jacket retained for the longer release-plus-ten-year period. These records can help document what was returned and who acknowledged it.
Shiawassee County publishes no property-pickup schedule or separate release-window policy. Call the jail when an item appears missing, then request the property acknowledgment if documentary confirmation is needed. Do not assume where an item is held or when it can be collected. The record, not a general practice from another county, controls.
Note: A property document supports the handling of belongings, but it does not replace the legal release form or receiving-agency record.
Find Shiawassee County Released Inmates
Begin with the custody system that last held the person. Shiawassee publishes no official roster and no recent-release feed. The official jail page directs inmate information questions to the jail phone. That makes a person-specific call the current-status starting point, followed by a release record when the answer must be preserved.
- Call the Shiawassee County Jail and use full identity details to ask whether the named person remains there.
- Check both local court levels for bond, dismissal, sentence, transfer, probation, or discharge entries.
- Search OTIS only when the facts indicate MDOC prison or supervision jurisdiction.
- Use VINE for an agency-reported custody event and future notice, while treating it as notification rather than a certified record.
- Check BOP or ICE only when a federal or immigration transfer is supported by the case.
- Request the Sheriff’s release or transfer record to document the exact county departure.
A released person normally drops from a current-custody roster. A missing name alone remains inconclusive because transfer, spelling, timing, and another custodian can explain it.
The same-day fallback is covered in the Shiawassee County 24-Hour Releases page. For a date that has not yet occurred, use the Shiawassee County release date lookup and keep eligibility separate from actual departure.
Shiawassee Released Inmates in OTIS
The MDOC Offender Tracking Information System covers prisoners, parolees, probationers under MDOC supervision, and people discharged within three years of supervision discharge. It does not cover a jail-only sentence, a city lockup, a person not yet sentenced to MDOC, or someone beyond the public display period.
| OTIS field or filter | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Six-digit MDOC number | Use when known because it is more exact than a name |
| First and last name | Start broad, then compare identity and sentence details |
| Parolees | Shows people physically out of prison but still supervised |
| Probationers | Shows qualifying MDOC community supervision |
| Discharged | Shows a completed MDOC supervision record within the display scope |
| Date Paroled | Best public OTIS field for actual transition to parole |
| Earliest Release Date | Eligibility date, not a promised departure |
The MDOC OTIS scope page shown below explains who is excluded and why older discharged records disappear.
Open a matching record and compare the photograph, MDOC number, sentences, and dates. A name match by itself is not enough.
Shiawassee Courts Explain Jail Release
Every charged Shiawassee defendant begins at the 66th District Court. Adult misdemeanors remain there, while felony preliminary proceedings may move to the 35th Circuit Court. Search both levels when the charge type or later path is unclear. A search limited to one court can produce a false “no case” conclusion.
The MiCOURT Shiawassee case search can show the Register of Actions, including bond, plea, dismissal, sentence, probation, and discharge entries. Court records are informational online. For an official copy, use the court’s own record request process, not a Michigan FOIA request, because the judiciary is outside FOIA’s public-body definition.
The official case-search screen below identifies the court route used to pair a legal order with a separate jail departure record.
A bond order or dismissal explains authority. The Sheriff record still supplies the physical execution time and any destination.
Shiawassee Post-Release Supervision Check
An OTIS Parolee result confirms release from secure state custody while MDOC jurisdiction continues. A Probationer result confirms qualifying MDOC community supervision, but it does not prove a prior prison term. Misdemeanor probation may instead be supervised through the 66th District Court. The actual order determines the controlling office and conditions.
Shiawassee is part of MDOC Field Operations Region 6. Use the live office directory for current supervision-office details. An absconder label means active supervision has a reporting or compliance problem. It is not a normal discharge. The Shiawassee County post-release supervision record supplies more detail.
Shiawassee Community Corrections After Release
The county’s Office of Community Corrections describes evidence-based programs and services aimed at supervised people. Its office at County Administration is a local navigation point after release. It is not a jail locator, not the custodian of the release form, and not a substitute for the supervising agent or court.
That narrow role is useful. A person can be in the community, taking part in local services, and still have an active sentence or supervision order. Verify legal status with OTIS, the court, or the assigned office. Use Community Corrections for its published program role rather than asking it to certify a jail departure.
Shiawassee Release Alerts and Federal Checks
Michigan VINE supports custody and court information plus release, transfer, and escape notifications. Search by name and identifier when available, then read the reporting agency and event together. A release event from Shiawassee can coexist with a transfer event elsewhere. VINE is free and useful for future notice, but it is not a certified release instrument.
Federal cases use separate systems. The BOP locator covers federal inmates and can display a past Release Date with “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody.” That statement ends only the BOP question. It does not rule out supervision, another case, or immigration custody. ICE’s locator covers current detainees and certain people released from ICE custody within a short period. USMS has no public released-person locator, so a focused records request and the federal court docket may be required.
Shiawassee Release or ICE Transfer
An immigration detainer can turn a county departure into a transfer rather than a return to the community. ICE describes a detainer as a request for notice and up to 48 additional hours so it can assume custody. Research found no official evidence of a Shiawassee County ICE contract, so this is a conditional path, not a claim about routine local practice.
When a Sheriff form names ICE, check the ICE Online Detainee Locator System. Use the nine-digit A-number and country of birth when known, or exact name and country of birth. A blank result remains inconclusive because of the limited released-person window, spelling, age restrictions, and update timing. The transfer explanation shown below reinforces why one agency’s release is not proof of community return.
Preserve the county transfer record and then confirm the receiving system. Each source proves only the custody event within its own scope.
Clean Slate and Shiawassee Releases
Michigan’s automatic set-aside process can remove qualifying cases from public display after statutory periods. Eligible misdemeanors generally use a seven-year period. Eligible felonies generally use ten years from sentencing or release from MDOC custody, whichever is later. The exact statutory conditions control, and not every case qualifies.
That timing affects how old Shiawassee County released inmate records appear online. MiCOURT may suppress a qualifying case. OTIS also stops public display three years after supervision discharge, and it removes a record sooner when a qualifying conviction is set aside or expunged. Absence from either public portal cannot disprove a historic release. A focused request to the correct custodian may be the only remaining verification route.
Shiawassee Release Sources Compared
Choose the system by custodian and question. Current status, legal authority, actual departure, and continuing supervision are different facts. They may require different records.
| Source | Best use | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Shiawassee Jail phone | Current county custody status | Not a preserved release document |
| Sheriff release or transfer form | Actual county departure and destination | Proves only what Shiawassee did |
| MiCOURT | Bond, disposition, sentence, and supervision orders | May not show exact physical departure time |
| OTIS | MDOC prison, parole, probation, and recent discharge status | Excludes jail-only cases and older discharges |
| VINE | Agency-reported events and future alerts | Not a certified release record |
| BOP or ICE | Custody within the named federal system | Does not resolve every other custodian |
Does a missing jail name prove release? No. It is a reason to check the jail, court, destination field, and any receiving system. A documented departure plus a consistent receiving or community status is much stronger.
Shiawassee County Release Facility
The Facility Map supports one adult detention page in the county: the Shiawassee County Jail, operated by the Sheriff’s Office. It holds local jail custody tied to pending cases and jail sentences. Releases may go to the community, court-ordered supervision, MDOC, or another agency. The phone supplies current status, while the Sheriff record and court file document departure and authority.
The Youth Center is not an adult released-inmate facility. MDOC lists no state prison in Shiawassee County, and research found no county federal or ICE detention site. State, federal, or immigration searches remain conditional paths when a person’s records identify such a transfer.
